AMERICA Through the CBS Eye
On reserve to the Washakie Museum, Worland, WY
AMERICA Through the CBS Eye represents a sampling of over 30 million memorable images taken by CBS photographers contained in the CBS network archives dating back as far as 1928, when CBS first began broadcasting as a radio network and records those entertainers and personalities that have come into our homes over the past seventy years.
The exhibition, contains (148) historic black and white photographs and compelling audio clips from 'The CBS News 20th Century Roundup" anchored by Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite. "It offers more than a window on our past. It is a mirror on our collective memory as it spans more than 75 years of our nation's cultural and political history. We see the names and faces that have helped shape who we are, and who we'll be, personalities and events that should not be lost in the amnesia of our culture." said Gil Schwartz, CBS senior vice president of communications.
The exhibition also reflects how twentieth century entertainment evolved from vaudeville to radio, movies and television. Photographs include Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Gleason, Bing Crosby, Burns and Allen, Laurence Olivier, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, and many others. Scenes from classic TV series - The Honeymooners,
I Love Lucy, and All In The Family - evoke the decades they depicted.
AMERICA Through the CBS Eye was curated by John Filo, Director of Photo Operations at CBS. Filo is a former photo editor for Newsweek and deputy picture editor at Sports Illustrated. Filo won the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for one of the most compelling images of the Vietnam era-- the teenage girl kneeling over the body of a Kent State student who had been shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard. Filo currently assigns, edits and distributes photo coverage of CBS's current programming and is responsible for the marketing of the 30 million image CBS Photo Archive.
